Black tourmaline, also known as Schorl, is one of the most common tourmaline varieties. Rich in iron, it stands out for its opaque black color and naturally striated structure.

In AB quality, the pieces have a more raw and massive appearance, with natural striations that are less regular, less deep and sometimes less visible than on AA quality pieces. Some areas may be more compact, irregular or feature more natural matrix.

This difference in appearance is part of the quality grading and does not constitute a defect.

Difference Between AB Quality and AA Quality

AB quality generally features more irregular shapes, with less defined striations and a rougher surface.

AA quality stands out with longitudinal striations that are generally more pronounced, more regular and more visible, giving the pieces a more typical cathedral tourmaline appearance.
