The soft blue of calcite

Sky blue to lavender blue, veined with white, translucent at the edges, blue calcite is one of the most soothing polished stones to look at. Being soft, it is cut into large flat-based free forms, thick pebbles, spheres and hearts, at prices that are accessible for the size. It comes mainly from Madagascar. Choosing your pieces

Blue calcite is judged on the intensity and uniformity of the blue, its translucency and the polish, which should be smooth and scratch-free (the stone is fragile, handle it with care). Free forms of 6 to 10 cm are the best sellers; large blocks are display pieces to be ordered with knowledge of their weight.

What works in store
