The runic alphabet, called fuþark after the name of its first six letters, initially had 24 signs . There have been several types which have evolved over time, but also according to the people who used them. In the Scandinavian countries, where runes were most widely used, their number was reduced from the 8th century to end up with a system of 16 runes.
