Turquoise, a blue that spans civilizations

A copper and aluminum phosphate ranging from sky blue to blue-green, often veined with brown (the "matrix"), turquoise has adorned Egyptian, Persian and Native American jewelry for millennia. Crystal healing tradition makes it the protective stone of travelers and the stone of communication (throat chakra). Hardness 5 to 6 and a porous stone: natural turquoise is almost always stabilized (resin-impregnated) to hold up in jewelry making.

Choosing your quality, and naming it correctly

The market mixes three things a professional must distinguish: stabilized natural turquoise, reconstituted turquoise (agglomerated powder) and dyed howlite, sold under the name turquenite. Arabesk clearly states the nature of each reference: our "turquoise" products are stabilized natural stone, our "turquenite" products are dyed howlite, much cheaper and perfect for entry-level ranges. The quality of a true turquoise is seen in the saturation of the blue and the fineness of the matrix.

What sells in-store

Tumbled stones, beaded strands for designers, 6 or 8mm bead bracelets and pendants. In a display, turquoise pairs with lapis lazuli, amazonite and malachite for a blue-green ensemble, and carnelian for a warm contrast.
