Lapis Lazuli, the Blue of the Pharaohs
A rock based on lazurite, flecked with golden pyrite and veined with white calcite, lapis lazuli has been an ornamental stone since Antiquity: the Egyptians ground it to create the blue of their frescoes. Crystal healing tradition makes it the stone of wisdom, communication and clairvoyance (third eye chakra). Hardness 5 to 5.5: it wears well as jewelry but is sensitive to prolonged exposure to water and household products.
Choosing Your Quality
An AA quality lapis displays a deep, uniform ultramarine blue, with fine pyrite flecks and little calcite; the more white is present, the more the quality drops to A then AB. The reference deposit remains Afghanistan, where Arabesk sources its supply; Chilean lapis, lighter and more veined, is suitable for entry-level tumbled stones. Beware of dyed stones: a cotton swab soaked in alcohol reveals the coloring.
