Malachite, the green that catches the eye
A copper carbonate with deep green banded with light and dark stripes, malachite is one of the most decorative stones in the range: no other stone offers these concentric circles. Tradition credits it with properties of protection and transformation, making it an "absorbent" stone that should be cleansed often. Hardness of only 3.5 to 4: it scratches easily, is sensitive to salt water and acids, and should be presented as a decorative stone rather than a bath stone.
Choosing your quality
The value of a malachite lies in the contrast and regularity of its bands, and the absence of dull areas. AA-quality pieces show sharp circles, while A-quality pieces have more diffuse banding. Arabesk sources its malachite from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the main deposit, and offers both tumbled stone in bulk and polished collector pieces. Beware of resin imitations: real malachite feels cold and dense in the hand.
