Carnelian, the warm orange of the pharaohs
An orange to reddish-brown, translucent chalcedony, carnelian adorned Egyptian jewelry and Roman seals. Crystal healing tradition regards it as the stone of energy, creativity and confidence (sacral chakra), highly sought after in spring and among creatives. Hardness 6.5 to 7: it withstands water and daily wear, and its color is not affected by light.
Choosing your quality
Carnelian is judged by the saturation and uniformity of its orange: translucent stones with a bold, even orange are the most sought after; a more marbled brownish-orange suits entry-level tumbled stones. India, Uruguay and Brazil are the reference deposits; some Indian carnelian is heat-treated to intensify the color, a traditional and stable practice. Arabesk sorts batches so beads on the same strand match consistently.
