Sunstone, the orange that sparkles
An orange to reddish-brown feldspar flecked with hematite or copper inclusions, sunstone (heliolite) sparkles when turned: this is aventurescence, the same effect seen in aventurine. Crystal healing tradition regards it as the stone of joy, optimism and energy, the solar counterpart to moonstone, with which it is often sold as a pair. Hardness 6 to 6.5: it withstands daily wear.
Choosing your quality
Quality is judged by the density and brilliance of the sparkles and the warmth of the orange: a richly sparkling stone with a deep orange hue signals AA quality, while a paler stone with subtle sparkle is A quality. India and Norway are the classic sources; Arabesk sources mainly from India. Beware of "aventurine glass" (goldstone), a copper-infused glass sometimes sold under the same name: it is perfectly uniform and lacks any crystalline structure.
