Black tourmaline, the shield of the crystal healing aisle
Schorl is the protection stone most often recommended to beginners: tradition holds that it absorbs negative energies rather than deflecting them, grounding and calming the mind, and it is the answer to the "against electromagnetic waves" request you hear every week. Tourmaline is pyroelectric, a real physical property that feeds its reputation. Hardness 7 to 7.5, non-soluble: it withstands water and sunlight.
Recognizing a fine piece
Well-formed prisms, clear parallel striations, bright luster on fresh faces and a satisfying weight in hand: these are the marks of a good rough tourmaline. A slight black dust is normal; a crumbling stone is not. In tumbled form, look for a uniform black and a polish free of pitting. Distinguish it from obsidian (volcanic glass, lighter and glossier) and from onyx. You will find the other colors on the tourmaline page.
The best-selling shapes
The 3 to 6 cm rough piece, placed near a computer or at the entrance of a room, is the top-selling form; next come the tumbled stone, the raw pendant set in 925 silver and the pendulum. The tourmaline + selenite duo (protection + purification) and the tourmaline + tiger's eye + obsidian set are the most effective pairings. Sales peak in January. Discover all our natural stones.
