Selenite, the pearly white that cleanses
A fibrous, translucent variety of gypsum, selenite owes its name to Selene, the moon, for its satiny white sheen. Crystal healing tradition makes it the stone of purification and recharging: selenite plates and bowls are used to "cleanse" other stones and jewelry, making it an accessory that every crystal healing customer eventually buys. Hardness of only 2: it scratches with a fingernail and slowly dissolves in water, never get it wet.
Choosing the right quality
Selenite is judged by the regularity of its fibers and the clarity of its silky effect (chatoyancy) when the piece is tilted; AA-grade pieces are translucent and free of chalky areas. Morocco supplies most of the wands, towers and lamps. Arabesk selects pieces with clean edges and packages wands in uniform batches.
