Obsidian, the glass of volcanoes
Volcanic glass born from lava that cooled too quickly to crystallize, obsidian is black and glossy in its most common form, but also comes in mahogany (reddish-brown), in snowflake (white spots), in silver sheen and in celestial eye (iridescent circles). Crystal healing tradition makes it the stone of protection and truth par excellence, to be handled with respect. Hardness 5 to 5.5: it polishes beautifully but its edges can be sharp on rough pieces.
Choosing your quality
Black obsidian is judged by the depth and uniformity of its black color and the quality of its polish; patterned varieties (snowflake, celestial eye) by the clarity and regularity of their patterns. Mexico is the reference deposit. Arabesk offers each variety separately, as tumbled stones, spheres, pendulums and jewelry, with the variety indicated on the label.
