Hematite, the iron ore that shines like a mirror
A steel-grey iron oxide with a metallic lustre, hematite feels heavy in the hand and leaves a red streak when rubbed on a rough surface: this is what earned it its name, from the Greek word for "blood". Crystal healing tradition regards it as the ultimate grounding and strength stone, linked to the root chakra and vitality. Hardness 5 to 6: it polishes beautifully but is sensitive to impact and prolonged exposure to water, which can dull its shine.
Choosing quality, and naming it correctly
Be careful: many cheap "hematite bracelets" are actually made of hematine, a reconstituted compound that is often magnetic. Natural hematite is not magnetic (or barely so): a magnet can help tell them apart. Arabesk clearly states the exact nature of each item. Quality is judged by the polish, which should be even and free of pitting, and by the uniformity of the beads on strands.
