Onyx, the deep black of jewelry making
A black chalcedony with a mirror polish, onyx has been the reference black stone in jewelry since antiquity, where it was used for cameos and intaglios. Crystal healing tradition sees it as a stone of strength, self-control and protection, more "restrained" than obsidian. Hardness of 6.5 to 7: it withstands water and daily wear, making it the best black stone for rings and bracelets worn every day.
Choosing your quality, and naming it correctly
Commercial plain black onyx is almost always a black-dyed agate: this is a stable, traditional treatment, but one that should still be disclosed. Natural onyx is banded black and white. Don't confuse it with the "onyx" used in decorative objects, which is actually a banded calcite. Quality is judged by the depth of the black and the perfection of the polish, free of pitting or grey patches.
