Opoponax natural resins are associated with purification and protection. Opoponax (also spelled "opopanax" or "oppoponax") is a resin from the bark of a shrub found mainly in the Middle East or Africa, particularly in Somalia. Its odor is reminiscent of myrrh, another resinous gum produced by the balsam tree, or myrrh tree, whose scent is much more intense. Opoponax is often nicknamed “sweet myrrh”. It is traditionally used as incense, to purify the air, but also for its relaxing or stimulating properties.
