Lepidolite, the sparkling lilac mica
A lithium-rich mica, ranging from lilac to pinkish violet, with its characteristic shimmering flecks, lepidolite occurs in layered masses or mixed with quartz in polished pieces. Crystal healing tradition regards it as the ultimate anti-stress stone: calm, sleep, transition and letting go, in the same spirit as amethyst. Hardness 2.5 to 3: it scratches and flakes easily, best offered as a stone to display or hold in the hand; beads are generally made of lepidolite mixed with quartz for added durability.
Choosing your quality
Lepidolite is judged by the saturation of its lilac hue and the density of its sparkle: a deep, uniformly shimmering pinkish violet indicates AA quality; a greyer lilac or one more mixed with quartz indicates A quality. Brazil, Madagascar and Zimbabwe are the reference deposits. Arabesk flags fragile pieces and sorts bead batches by shade.
