Kunzite, the transparent lilac pink
A pink to pale violet variety of spodumene, discovered in the early 20th century and named after gemologist George Kunz, kunzite is a transparent stone with shifting reflections depending on the angle (pleochroism). Crystal healing tradition regards it as the stone of unconditional love and emotional soothing, part of the heart stone family alongside rose quartz. Hardness of 6.5 to 7 but with perfect cleavage: it withstands daily wear provided impacts are avoided; its color fades under prolonged sun exposure.
Choosing your quality
A kunzite is judged by the saturation of its pink and its transparency: a clear, true lilac pink signifies AA quality, while a very pale, slightly milky pink indicates A quality, perfect for tumbled stones and bracelets. Afghanistan, Pakistan, Brazil and Madagascar are the reference deposits. Rough crystals, elongated and striated, are highly prized by collectors.
