Purple quartz colored by iron, amethyst is the stone everyone recognizes and the backbone of any minerals section. Tradition makes it the stone of calm, sleep and meditation (crown and third eye chakras); its Greek name means "not intoxicated". February's birthstone, it sells year-round with a peak at Christmas for geodes.
From grade B to AAA
Intensity, consistency and transparency make the difference: B pale and milky, A true purple, AA deep and even purple, AAA deep with red flashes, often from Uruguay. Banded amethyst (chevron, Zambia, Malawi) and lavender amethyst are distinct varieties, not lower grades. Displaying two grades side by side boosts basket size: the customer sees the difference. Note: amethyst fades in sunlight, keep it away from sunlit display windows.
