Rhodonite, the pink veined with black
A pink to raspberry-pink manganese silicate crossed with black veins and dendrites of manganese oxide, rhodonite is instantly recognizable. Crystal healing tradition regards it as the stone of forgiveness, emotional repair and balance, in the same family as rose quartz but grounded by its black veining. Hardness 5.5 to 6.5: it withstands daily wear, away from hard knocks.
Choosing quality, and naming it correctly
Rhodonite is judged by the contrast between the pink and the black veins and by the saturation of the pink: a vivid pink with a crisp black network signals AA quality, while a duller pink with diffuse veining indicates A quality. It is often confused with rhodochrosite, which is banded with light stripes and more fragile: both names deserve explanation in-store. Reference deposits are found in Russia (the Urals), Australia, Peru and Madagascar; Arabesk states the origin.
