Fluorite, the rainbow stone
A calcium fluoride crystallizing in perfect cubes and octahedrons, fluorite (or fluorspar) comes in green, purple, blue, yellow and above all in multicolored bands on a single piece. Crystal healing tradition makes it the stone of concentration, learning and mental clarity, highly sought after by students and for the office. Hardness 4: it scratches easily and should be stored away from harder stones.
Choosing your quality
Quality is judged by transparency and color contrast: a clear rainbow fluorite with sharply defined green and purple bands indicates AA quality; a milkier or single-colored stone indicates A quality. Natural octahedrons, cleaved and unpolished, are a specialty much appreciated in bulk. Arabesk sources from China and Mexico and sorts batches by dominant color.
