Hawk's Eye, the blue sibling of Tiger's Eye
A fibrous blue-grey to midnight blue quartz, hawk's eye is tiger's eye before iron oxidation turns it golden: same structure, same chatoyancy, that luminous band that shifts as the stone is turned. Crystal healing tradition regards it as the stone of clear vision, perspective and protection from outside influences, considered 'cooler' than tiger's eye. Hardness 7: it withstands water and daily wear.
Choosing your quality
A hawk's eye is judged by the sharpness of its chatoyancy and the depth of its blue: a vivid luminous band on a midnight blue background signals AA quality; a duller blue-grey indicates A quality. South Africa is the benchmark source, along with India and Brazil. Beware of blue-dyed tiger's eye sold under this name: natural hawk's eye retains non-uniform blue-grey zones.
What sells in stores
Tumbled stones, 8mm beaded strands for designers, men's bracelets (often combined with tiger's eye and bull's eye in the 'three eyes' trio) and pendants. It rounds out a 'protection stones' section alongside hematite and obsidian.
