Bull's eye, the red tiger eye
A red-brown to mahogany fibrous quartz, bull's eye (or ox eye) is a tiger eye whose iron has been transformed by heat, either naturally or through heat treatment: it keeps the same chatoyancy, that band of light gliding across the stone. Lithotherapy tradition regards it as the stone of grounding, quiet strength and perseverance (root chakra). Hardness 7: it withstands water and daily wear.
Choosing your quality
A bull's eye is judged by the vividness of its chatoyancy and the warmth of its red: a sharp light band on a deep mahogany background signals AA quality; a duller brown indicates A quality. South Africa is the benchmark deposit. Most pieces on the market are heat-treated, a traditional and stable practice that Arabesk discloses.
