Chrysocolla, the blue-green of copper mines
A hydrated copper silicate with a turquoise-blue hue shading into green, often mixed with malachite, azurite or quartz, chrysocolla forms in the oxidation zone of copper deposits. Crystal healing tradition regards it as the stone of gentle speech, calm and femininity (throat chakra). Hardness of 2 to 4 for pure chrysocolla, up to 7 when impregnated with quartz ("gem silica"): most pieces on the market are sensitive to water and impact.
Choosing your quality
Quality is judged by the saturation of the blue-green color and the sharpness of contrast with the matrix; silicified pieces, hard and polishable, are the most sought after in jewelry making. Peru, Chile, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the United States are the reference deposits. Arabesk indicates provenance and flags fragile pieces. Imitations (dyed howlite or resin) are common at low prices: genuine chrysocolla is heterogeneous, never uniform.
