Azurite, the deep blue of copper mines

A copper carbonate with an intense azure blue, azurite forms in the same deposits as malachite, with which it is often intermingled as "azurite-malachite", blue and green interwoven. It was once ground into blue pigment for painters before being supplanted by lapis. Crystal healing tradition regards it as the stone of intuition, focus and clairvoyance (third eye chakra). Hardness 3.5 to 4: fragile, it is sensitive to water, heat and friction, and slowly alters into malachite when exposed to air.

Choosing your quality

Azurite is judged by the depth of its blue and, for rough pieces, by the clarity of its crystals or nodules; polished azurite-malachite with a marked blue-green contrast is the most sought after. Morocco, Namibia and the United States are the reference deposits. Arabesk mainly offers rough collector's stone and polished pieces, with origin indicated. Beware of very cheap "azurites": often dyed howlite or calcite.

What sells in stores

Small-sized rough stone for collecting, tumbled stone sold individually, polished azurite-malachite pieces and pendants. It is displayed alongside lapis lazuli, sodalite and chrysocolla in a "deep blues" section.
