Kyanite, blue in blades

An aluminum silicate that crystallizes into long striated blades, sapphire blue to blue-gray, sometimes green or black, kyanite (from the Greek "blue") has a unique feature: its hardness varies by direction, 4.5 along the blades and 6.5 across them. In crystal healing tradition it is considered the stone of alignment, communication and meditation (throat and third eye chakras), and one of the rare stones said not to need purifying. Fragile along the blades: handle with care, and avoid for rings.

Choosing your quality

A kyanite is judged by the saturation of its blue and the transparency of its blades: a translucent sapphire blue indicates AA quality, an opaque blue-gray indicates A quality, suitable for tumbled stones and beads. Brazil, Nepal and India are the reference deposits. Arabesk offers raw blades individually and sorts its beads by shade.
