Nephrite Jade, the True Jade of Carvers

A fibrous amphibole ranging from dark green to olive green, sometimes cream or brown, nephrite is one of the two minerals legitimately called jade, alongside jadeite. It is the historic jade of China, New Zealand (Maori pounamu) and pre-Columbian cultures. Crystal healing tradition makes it the stone of wisdom, serenity and kidney protection, hence its name. Hardness of 6 to 6.5 but exceptional toughness: it withstands impact better than many steels, which made it ideal for tools.

Choosing Your Quality

A nephrite is judged by the uniformity of its green color, its translucency at thin edges, and the fineness of its polish, smooth and waxy. Canada (British Columbia), Russia (Siberia) and China are the reference deposits. Arabesk reserves the name jade for nephrite and jadeite, and calls serpentine the so-called "China jades" that are not true jade.

What Sells in Store

Tumbled stones, bead strands, 8mm bead bracelets, pendants, donuts and small carved objects make up the bulk of the display. It pairs well with serpentine, green aventurine and chrysoprase in the "green stones" collection.
