Jade, the sacred stone of Asia
The word jade refers to two distinct minerals: nephrite, dark green to olive green, and jadeite, rarer, ranging from emerald green to lavender. Carved in China for over five thousand years, jade there symbolizes virtue and longevity. Crystal healing tradition makes it the stone of wisdom, serenity and prosperity. Hardness 6 to 7 and very high toughness: it resists impact and water, making it a stone for jewelry and objects worn for a lifetime.
Choosing quality, and naming it correctly
The market is full of "jades" that are not real jade: serpentine ("China jade", "new jade"), aventurine ("Indian jade"), dyed quartz. Arabesk only labels nephrite and jadeite as jade, and specifies which one. Quality is judged by the uniformity of the green color, translucency and polish; Canada, Russia and China supply nephrite, while Myanmar and Guatemala supply jadeite.
What sells in stores
