Serpentine, the olive green stone with snake-like scales
A yellow-green to olive green magnesium silicate, often mottled with dark spots reminiscent of snake skin, serpentine has been worked since prehistoric times. Crystal healing tradition regards it as a stone of regeneration, meditation and heart opening, sometimes linked to kundalini energy. Hardness 2.5 to 5.5 depending on the variety: most pieces scratch easily, so they should be presented as decorative and meditation stones rather than bath stones.
Choosing quality, and naming it correctly
Serpentine is often sold under the names "China jade", "new jade" or "Korean jade": it is not jade (jadeite or nephrite), and Arabesk always names it serpentine. Quality is judged by translucency and the evenness of the green color; "infinite" pieces (light-colored serpentine from South Africa) are the most sought after. Deposits are numerous: China, Afghanistan, Peru, South Africa.
What sells in stores
