Chrysoprase, the apple-green chalcedony
Chalcedony colored apple-green to mint-green by nickel, chrysoprase is the most precious of the chalcedonies, prized by the Greeks and Romans and later by Frederick II of Prussia, who covered entire rooms with it. Crystal healing tradition makes it the stone of optimism, renewal and compassion (heart chakra). Hardness 6.5 to 7: it withstands water and daily wear, but its color can fade after prolonged sun exposure.
Choosing quality, and proper naming
A chrysoprase is judged by the saturation and uniformity of its green and by its translucency: a true, even apple-green signals AA quality, while a paler or brown-marbled green indicates A quality. Australia (Queensland) is the reference deposit, along with Tanzania and Brazil. Beware of green-dyed chalcedony sold under this name: Arabesk states the origin and nature of each lot.
What sells in store
The tumbled stone sold individually, the 6 to 8 mm bead strand, the bracelet and the 925 silver pendant. It pairs well with green aventurine, jade and peridot in a "light green stones" display, and brings a brighter hue than amazonite.
