Garnet, the deep red of ancient jewelry
A family of silicates whose most well-known variety, almandine, is a dark red with violet undertones, garnet has adorned jewelry since the Bronze Age and remains the birthstone for January. It also comes in orange (spessartite, hessonite) and green (tsavorite, grossular). Crystal healing tradition makes it the stone of vitality, passion and commitment (root chakra). Hardness 6.5 to 7.5: durable, perfect for everyday jewelry.
Choosing your quality
A garnet is judged by the transparency and vividness of its red: clear stones with a vivid red are jewelry-grade gems, while translucent to opaque stones, darker in tone, are used for tumbled stones and beads. Raw dodecahedral crystals (twelve faces), often on matrix, are highly prized by collectors. India, Mozambique and Madagascar are the reference deposits; Arabesk sorts its bead batches by shade.
What sells in stores
Tumbled stone, raw crystal, 4 to 8 mm bead strands for designers, sterling silver bracelets and pendants. It completes a "red stones" range alongside red jasper, carnelian and ruby, and sells well with hematite in "vitality" combinations.
