Ruby, the red of corundum
The red variety of corundum, cousin to sapphire, ruby owes its color to chromium. Gem-quality stones are among the most expensive in the world, but opaque ruby and ruby in zoisite (red on green, from Tanzania) are accessible crystal healing stones. Tradition makes it the stone of passion, courage and vitality (root and heart chakra). Hardness 9: after diamond, it is the hardest stone in the department, unaffected by water and scratches.
Choosing your quality, and naming it correctly
Quality is judged by the saturation of the red and transparency; in crystal healing, mostly opaque rubies are used, raspberry red to purplish red, often as rough hexagonal crystals. Many affordable rubies are treated (heated, glass-filled): Arabesk indicates what it knows about each batch and names mixed pieces "ruby zoisite". India, Mozambique, Tanzania and Madagascar are the reference deposits for these qualities.
