Opal, a stone with a hundred faces
A hydrated, non-crystalline silica, opal ranges from opaque common stones to iridescent gems: the soft, milky pink opal of the Andes, green opal, blue opal, the orange fire opal of Mexico, Australian boulder opal on its ironstone matrix, and precious opals with their play of colour. The lithotherapy tradition sees it as the stone of emotion, intuition and creativity, with nuances according to colour. Hardness 5.5 to 6.5 and a water-bearing stone: it dislikes knocks, heat and drying out.
Choosing the right grade
For common opals, quality is judged by the evenness and softness of the colour; for play-of-colour opals, by the intensity and variety of the flashes. Peru (pink, green and blue opals), Mexico, Ethiopia and Australia are the reference sources. Arabesk states the variety and origin on every reference and sells iridescent stones individually.
