Snowflake obsidian, black dotted with white

A variety of obsidian whose black glass is speckled with white or grey cristobalite spots, snowflake obsidian owes its name to these "snowflakes" that soften the deep black of the volcanic glass. Crystal healing tradition regards it as a gentler protection stone than black obsidian, associated with balance, acceptance and stepping back from repetitive patterns. Hardness 5 to 5.5: it polishes beautifully but is prone to chipping, and the edges of rough pieces can be sharp.

Choosing your quality

Snowflake obsidian is judged by the clarity and distribution of its flakes: well-defined white spots, evenly spread over a deep black, indicate AA quality; greyer or more sparse spots indicate A quality. The United States (Utah) and Mexico are the reference deposits. Arabesk sorts bead batches so that every bracelet shows visible snowflakes.

What sells in store
