Apatite, electric blue
A calcium phosphate whose name comes from the Greek for "to deceive," as it has so often been mistaken for other stones, apatite comes in turquoise blue, midnight blue, green and yellow; it is the blue, vivid and saturated variety that shops look for. Crystal healing tradition makes it the stone of motivation, expression and controlled appetite, often requested in "fresh start" programs. Hardness 5: it scratches easily and should be stored away from quartz; best avoided in rings.
Choosing your quality
Apatite is judged on saturation and transparency: clear neon blue stones are rare and expensive jewelry gems; translucent to opaque stones, medium blue to midnight blue, are used for tumbled stones and bracelets. Madagascar and Brazil are the reference deposits; Arabesk sources mainly from Madagascar and sorts batches by intensity.
What sells in stores
Tumbled stone sold individually, rough stone, 6 or 8 mm bead bracelets and pendants. It pairs well with aquamarine, blue calcite and larimar in a "blue stones" display, where its electric blue catches the eye.
