Aquamarine, the sea-colored beryl
A light blue to blue-green variety of beryl, cousin to emerald, aquamarine gets its name from the Latin for "sea water". Sailors carried it as a good luck charm; lithotherapy tradition makes it the stone of courage, communication and serenity (throat chakra). Hardness 7.5 to 8: it's one of the most resistant stones in the range, perfect for jewelry worn every day.
Choosing quality
Aquamarine is judged by the purity of its blue and its transparency: a clear, pure blue indicates AA quality; a pale, slightly milky or included blue indicates A quality, ideal for tumbled stones and bracelets. The reference deposits are in Brazil, Pakistan and Madagascar, where Arabesk sources its supply. Batches are sorted so that beads within a single bracelet share a consistent shade.
